8 house: Crises and depth

Collective, change, crisis

Houses

How do I experience loss and how do I deal with another's resources?

What it means

The eighth house concerns what cannot be split in half: other people's resources, debts and inheritance, crises, extreme intimacy. It is the house of the irreversible: events after which a person is no longer the same.

How to read in your chart

Look at the planets in the eighth house and Pluto: they describe attitudes to crises and other people's resources. The eighth house also governs shared finances: inheritance, loans, partner's income, shares in joint ventures.

If the house is empty

A house without planets does not mean the theme is absent. It is read by the sign on its cusp and the ruler of that sign: where the ruler is placed, the theme goes. Empty houses in a chart are usually more than half – there are ten planets and twelve houses.

Why birth time is needed

Houses are built with the Placidus system from the time and place of birth. An error of four minutes in the time shifts the Ascendant by about a degree, and an error of an hour can move a planet into the neighbouring house. Without a known time the platform shows no houses at all, rather than inserting noon and producing a plausible but wrong chart.
